You Have To Systemize Your Tax Business

Does the thought of leaving your tax office for the whole season with just your employees to run it (and your livelihood on the line) make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up? How about your stomach; is it in knots as you imagine what would go on?

It shouldn’t be, because you should spend every available minute of your time systemizing your office so it will run like a top WITHOUT YOU EVER STEPPING FOOT IN THE DOOR!

This is the ultimate way to run a business. No matter where you are now in your tax business, you can start “delegating yourself right out of a job” today! This is what I did for years and eventually became NOT involved in the everyday tasks of running the business. I took the responsibility for getting more clients in the door (as should every business owner).

Many tax business owners don’t like entertaining the thought of this. Why? Because their self-worth is tied up in their work. They think if they don’t prepare tax returns, then something is wrong with them. If they aren’t busy during tax season (or stressed out), then they really don’t feel good about themselves.

Those are self-image and self-esteem issues. (You gotta deal with those things yourself.)

The bottom line is you did not get into the tax business or decide to own your own company so it would control your life! You want your business to serve you, not you serve your business.

(Too many tax professionals are chained to their desks every tax season because they have not taken the time to systemize their office so they could have a little freedom!)

Michael Gerber says in his book, The E Myth (I highly recommend it by the way), that you should systemize your business so well that you could sell a franchise to other people in your industry on exactly how to do everything in your office at exactly the right time etc.

Example: Have you ever seen a McDonald’s franchisee manual? It’s the most systemized, detailed thing you have ever seen in your life! (Burger cooked for 92 seconds, then flip, etc.)

Well what if your operations manual in your tax office was the same way? Wouldn’t you feel better about being out of the country for the whole tax season?

A good way to start “working up to this” is to plan a few long weekends AWAY from your office DURING TAX SEASON. This will help motivate you to “get your ducks in a row” better for your employees. (No phone calls either. The building is not going to burn down with you out of town.)

The next tax season, plan a week vacation during the “slower” part of your tax season.

I really mean DO THIS! You ARE the owner. (You can take off anytime you want.)

As you get more use to doing this, your systems in your office will become better. You will have more and better quality “key” employees “watching the fort” for you.

Decide now what your ultimate goal is and plan your systems around it. If it’s leaving the country for the whole tax season, while your business takes in a six figure net profit (and you never stepped foot in the office the whole year), then do it!
